Do you believe in fairies?

My daughter has always loved fairies.  I remember her reception teacher commenting once on how it was always fairies with Freyja.

My parents buy little 'glass' (as she calls them) fairies to hide out in their garden for her to find.  She does really seem to believe they are real and has come up with an elaborate story involving the Fairy Queen granting permission to fairies to be found by Freyja.  So she still believes in fairies.  But she is starting to get suspicious...

It's bedtime and she has written a note to the fairies and wants me to leave the bedroom window open so they can fly in to get it.  It's freezing in her room and so I'm explaining to her that the fairies are magic and she doesn't need to leave the window open.  But this time she isn't buying it.

I ask her how the tooth fairy gets her teeth, as we don't leave the window open then.  But she laughs and says 'it's not really a fairy, it's you'.  I act all aghast and ask her why she thinks I would give her money for her teeth, but she just can't see how the fairy could possibly carry a pound coin. I tell her they are magic, the coin is tiny and she makes it grow when she exchanges it for the tooth.  She buys this, for now, though is still not convinced that the fairies can get in the house unless the window is open.  She asks if the note she has written is still there and she says she really hopes the fairies do take it.  I sense she is testing me out, seeing if I will give something away.  But I won't because I  believe in fairies.

Next thing she'll be telling me Father Christmas doesn't exist.
