The Incredible Sulk
My daughter has always been a sulker. I have a sulker and a shouter in terms of how my two children react to situations they are unhappy with. I wonder what Noah will do?
Anyway, the last year or so hasn't been too bad in the way of sulky behaviour. She does get a bit moody, but full on strops have been few and far between. But recently I have noticed more and more creeping in. She has had 5 full on sulks in the last 5 days. Some have been understandable, in that she is disappointed about something. But often it is simply because she hasn't got her own way. It's rather unpleasant. We have had to have 'a talk'. Yikes. I can't really remember the last time I had to have 'a talk' with Freyja.
We've had a lot of change over the last 6 months - new baby, me on maternity leave, a new school for Freyja and a new job for Adrian which has led to changes in our general routine. I am certainly feeling the effects, so I expect my children are too. This is no doubt a factor in some of Theo's more difficult moments and also in Freyja's recent sulks.
But I also think her age may be playing a part. Half way through year 1, I am noticing changes. While she is still very much about princesses and fairies, she is also starting to show me little chants and dance routines she's picked up in the playground and telling me which boy she likes that week. And there is a little bit of an attitude coming through.
Quite frankly, it is a terrifying window to the future and I would like to run straight back to the pre-school years right now. But there is no turning back in this game.
