Baking Disasters # 236
One burnt and collapsed carrot cake.

With Theo's help, I tried my hand at a carrot cake today. It seemed super easy and I'm sure baked by someone else would be great. Mine was very wobbly after the suggested baking time so I left it in a bit longer and then the top burnt and it collapsed. Oops.
I used out of date self-raising flour. I'm sure this must be the problem. And I am also still getting used to the new oven and haven't quite worked out how to get my cakes baked without burning the top. It is nothing to do with my baking skills, I am sure...
It did taste really nice though, so I have been polishing it off regardless.

failed cake still get eaten in our house too... usually by me!
you probably need to reduce the temperature and cook for a bit longer, at a guess. might be trial and error working it out though.
@Vicky - some of mine have been too awful even for me to eat!
@Rowan - thanks for the tip, I wasn't sure if I should reduce both temp and time or just one, or neither...will keep trying!
if it's burning the top but the middle isn't cooked properly, then the oven is too hot. you need a lower temperature to cook the middle whilst not burning the rest. drop it by 10 degrees and see how you go - use a cocktail stick or something to test if the middle is cooked, if it comes out clean, it's ok to bring out.
Thanks Rowan, I will try that and see how I go.
Oh no, but at least it didn't go to waste! I managed to serve up uncooked toad in the hole to guests recently (thank god the sausages were cooked so they didn't get food poisoning). They were all too polite to say anything but it tasted terrible.
