It's all gone a bit Disney...

Up until a few months ago we'd pretty much avoided the whole Disney princess thing in the Lightly household. That is not to say that our house is not very pink and full of fairies and princesses, just that we'd avoided fairies and princesses of the Disney variety up to that point. Not intentionally, it hadn't really happened.

Now, I've no idea how it did happen, but we are now in full on Disney princess mode. And I must admit to slightly encouraging this, though I'm not quite sure why. I think I just like the idea of sitting down to watch Aladdin or - my personal fave - The Little Mermaid together. So, succumbing to call of Disney, I bought a Sleeping Beauty DVD and have unleashed a Disney monster in my child. She is Princess Aurora crazy. Because not only is Aurora a princess, but she is also the pink one. Gah. Why didn't I start off with Beauty and the Beast?

Theo is also very keen on Sleeping Beauty. He's got the song pretty much spot on now and every time he starts up with 'I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream', I fall apart. Freyja sings it with an American accent.

I was actually very surprised at how much my kids did like this cartoon given how old fashion it looks - even after it's been revamped, or whatever has been done to it for the 50th birthday edition that we bought. Compared to the computer generated cartoons you get these days it looks very dated. And I thought the bad fairy and the dragon would be way too scary and the pictures too flat. But they love it. And I love the way everyone gets drunk and blames falling asleep on the wine...!

We've also watched Tinkerbell (surprisingly good, according to my husband...) and - keeping with the Disney theme, but trying to balance out the whole princess/fairy thing, we've got The Aristocats and 101 Dalmatians. The Little Mermaid kept Freyja silent for the duration on the flight back, but she found the genie in Aladdin a bit much, even though I told her he was a goodie. But it's Sleeping Beauty that has really won over my own little princess.

So, we're embracing the Disney princesses and we're Team Aurora all the way here.

I'm just hoping that we will be able to stand firm against Barbie as that will be a step too far. I was always a Sindy girl, myself...

We watched Beauty and the Beast once and Jacob became distraught when Gaston died - he simply couldn't see that he was the bad guy. *sigh*

we've moved away from Disney a bit in the past year although we still have Toy Story regularly - but they were great fans of Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book and Aladdin. They occasionally request the last two films and love singing along with the songs in the car.

I wish Disney would re-release The Lion King on dvd, because I think they'd quite like that (mostly because of the flatulent warthog, but hey ho!).

Oooo, I'd forgotten all about The Lion King! Definitely getting that one.
