You mean I have to go home now?

Today is the last day of my 4 week break. I took a week holiday and 3 weeks parental leave, to make the most of the last of Freyja's pre-school years. We've had a great time, staying in Dubai, where my parents have lived for 30 years and where I grew up.

So I'm feeling a little sad to be going - I've slipped right back into life in Dubai. Though it will be nice to get back to my house and my things - as always, I massively overpacked for the kids and underpacked for myself and quite frankly I'm fed up of rotating the same few outfits...! And Freyja has recently started mentioning that she'd like to sleep in her own bed and has had enough of sharing a room with her brother (hmmm, may have to rethink those plans to put them in together...)

A few developments worth noting:

Freyja can swim! Really, properly, in the deep end, without any armbands. She's been able to swim with armbands for a few years now, learning during the holidays when we visit my parents. We've slowly been deflating them and she spent 3 weeks swimming round with a completely empty pair of armbands before she finally discarded them and braved the deep end unaided. There's been no stopping her since - as I type, she is playing tag in the pool with her cousins

Theo, who is very-nearly-but-not quite-two-years-old, is talking (and singing!) non-stop, which still amazes me. He now often strings 3 and 4 words together, my favourite of which are 'I got it first!' and 'Where are you, Mummy?' He still also often copies the last word or two of things he overhears - 'arsehole' being a recent one that I hope he doesn't remember.

Right, I'm off to enjoy my last few hours here - provided that volanic ash cloud from Iceland doesn't disrupt our flight back...

I hope you managed to avoid getting delayed by the ash cloud

Sounds like a perfect break - my parents were out in Dubai for 12 years and I loved holidaying there, real shame they're back now and we haven't got the chance to go back there

Hello! It has been lovely - I grew up here and went to school and despite all the changes (which are huge!) I still love coming here and get a feeling of coming home.

Just found out our flight has been cancelled! Not sure when we'll be rescheduled, but hopefully in the next 24 hours. I am mentally prepared to fly back now.
