Time for bed
So, we've finally done it. Taken the sides off Freyja's cot that is.
I've been resisting - Freyja didn't seem very bothered by it and given our disturbed nights I didn't think it was worth rushing. But recently she's been asking about it and on Tuesday morning, as I heaved her out of her cot, she asked 'when are we taking the sides off'. Time for action.
So today Adrian rushed home from work and set to dismantling the cotbed to great excitment from both Freyja and Theo:

Freyja wanted to go to bed at 6pm, as soon as it was finished:

We kept her up until 6.45, read her story in bed, explained that she should now stay in bed until the morning, tucked her into the duvet (itself a new thing as she's been in a sleeping bag until now), kissed her goodnight and crept out.
Two seconds later, before I'd even got downstairs, Freyja appeared on the landing and declared 'There you are! I'm awake now!'
We will see how it goes.

Hahaha, this was really funny! I'm sure you didn't think so at the time but it was! Thank you! :)
Yannick never had a cot bed and he's been sleeping in a single size bed since April. He's never leaving his bed on his own (unless it's morning), always waiting for mum to come over and pick him up. He's also changed to a duvet a while ago - which is not the greatest thing at this age as I now have to constantly check on him that he's still tucked in properly. If not, he'll wake up and be cold. It will be much easier during the summer.
She actually stayed in bed for the rest of the night - didn't even fall out! I had to visit her a few times, but that's not unusual.
I wonder when she will properly realise that she really can just get out whenever she wants...

how about getting a portable bed side? we've got one and put it on Sam's cot bed for the first month that the sides were off.
Ours collapses down to a smallish bag and we take it with us when we go anywhere that the boys are likely to have have to sleep in a proper single bed. Single beds, especially divan ones, are quite high up. Its a good investment, anyway.
The other thing you might want to do is keep your upstairs safety gate shut at night. I know that when Irie went into a bed for the first time, they found her downstairs playing with the pots and pans in the kitchen at 2am! Sam doesn't get out of bed unless he knows its getting up time, apart from 3am on Christmas Day when I found him downstairs anxiously checking to see whether Santa had been or not :)
I couldn't agree more with Rowan about the portable bed side, it makes Yannick feel so much safer in his bed. Ours doesn't fold down very small and I wouldn't dream about taking it on a flight to Germany (enough weight to carry without that) but it still made my life easier over the last two years. I used to have it on my bed when Yannick and I were co-sleeping.
And our gate has always been shut too.
Forgot to say in my first comment: YAY for Freija and her big girl's bed! :))
Well she seems quite happy in it as it is, but I'll see how it goes. Portable sides would certainly be useful for standard single beds when I visit my parents/in-laws.
And, yes, the stairgate is back in action.

Hi Solveig,
Sorry for posting this as a comment but can’t find your email address contacts on your blog. I’m getting in touch to see if you would be interested in becoming a Beta tester for a new website, help4mums.com, which is due to launch on Mother’s Day this year. Of course we don’t expect you to give your time for nothing, so there is an incentive.
Please contact me off-blog if you are interested and I can tell you more about the new site and what sort of feedback we’d be looking for from you.
Alex
