Wee

I have been wondering if it would be a good idea to potty train Freyja before the new baby arrives. She'll be 2 years 4 months by then so it should be possible. Then, when I was in Dubai, I was a having a chat with my mum and some of her friends, who had all potty trained at different times ranging from 18 months to 3 and a half years, and all said leave it until she is older - they all thought about 2 and half would be a good time to do it. They thought it would be easier, quicker and much less stressful for both me and her. So I've decided to leave it until next summer when she will be 2 and a half and it will be much easier to let her run around nappy-free.

I don't actually think she's anywhere near ready for potty training anyway - although she tells me when she has done a poo, she doesn't seem to know when she is weeing. She does have a potty, she knows what it is (although maybe not what it is for), and for a few months now she has sat on it (for all of 2 seconds!) before her bath but she has never actually done anything in it. We haven't been bothering with it for a while now. Then last night I was running her bath, and she was about to brush her teeth when she suddenly said 'wee', went and picked up her potty, sat down on it, stayed there for a while and when she had got up she had done a wee. I absolutely could not believe it. And she may never do it again because I think I terrified her with all the cheering and fuss I made of her. Anyway, I'm still not planning on doing anything until next summer, but maybe she is a little further down the line than I thought.

She's now dipping her toast into her juice and sucking it out going 'yum, yum'. Guess I won't be finishing off her leftovers this morning.

I think we started at about the equivalent time to where you are now. Using washable nappies was a big incentive for us to stop having to use them!

Now I'm no expert, having only had one child so far (another one coming) but all I would say is that potty training's a classic learning curve insofar as it's non-linear. It's up, down, flat, down again but gradually trending towards achieving the goal.

We are now doing the "no nappy at night" thing and it's the same again. A week of dry and then a big wet. It seems a question of the successes starting to outnumber the failures until, in the end, they triumph.

Thank you for the comment - it all helps! I guess slowly and steadily is the best approach - no 'potty training in a week'.

Though I actually think it might be me who isn't ready to start it yet...

I know that girls are generally a bit quicker at picking potty training up, but I do think you're going to have to resign yourself to changing two lots of nappies for a few months.

Two and a half seems like a good age - I started Jacob then, but I probably should have waited. Its taken us so long to get it sorted, it leads me to believe we could have waited another few months before making a start. What with starting at playgroup at the same time, I think he had too many changes going on his life.

That's another thing I've found (and it might just be a boy thing), but if there's lots going on (ie new nursery or new baby in the family), its just a bit too much for them to take in. Jacob's tantrums were awful at the beginning of the year, and I put them directly down to the removal of a couple of safety nets - my presence at playgroup, and his nappy.

I'm definitely waiting - otherwise I'd have to start now and I just don't think she's ready (and I'm certainly not!). I also do not want to find that I spend ages getting her potty trained only for her to regress to nappies when the new one comes along, as i've heard can happen.

2 and half will coincide with summer which I think must make things a little easier, and hopefully things will have settled down a little after the arrival of the baby.
