London Aquarium

As most of Freyja's holiday so far had been spent in Homebase or B&Q, on Thursday we took her to the London Aquarium . It was great fun. She really seemed amazed, rushing around excitedly, pointing and opening & closing her mouth like a little fish.

Her favourite bit was a touch pool with rays - you put your hand in and if you are lucky a ray brushes past. They were just like dogs - coming to the surface and splashing around for attention. We all got a little pet though I think Freyja was more interested in the water than the rays! She yelled when we took her away.

We ended with an early lunch at Giraffe, which is a good restaurant and particularly good if you have kids. The food is great and they are very accommodating of your children without being overly 'kiddie'. You do actually enjoy going yourself - and it's not only other parents and their children eating there!

I do like the London Aquarium. We took Jacob and Sam there not long before we moved out of London.

The one in Hull is marvellous - although Jacob (being Doug's boy) was more interested in the computers than the fish :-)

Fourteen years ago, Ian and I went on our first platonic date. We went to Sea Life in Scarborough and tickled rays on the nose, even though it said you weren't supposed to. The rays love it.

Aquariums have been a bit of a special thing since then and I think we've done about ten worldwide now. Sea lions have taken over from rays as my favourite waterbeasts, though. Bark bark bark.

The Aquarium in Genoa is ginormous. You keep thinking you've got to the end of it and then there's more. There's a restaurant half way round which mainly serves sea food as if they're saying, "now that you've learnt about fish, why not kill and eat one?"

I also vouch for that giraffe being suitable for adults, which weirdly we are supposed to be going to tonight. The last time I went there we had every cocktail on the menu between three of us. I don't remember very much about the evening beyond that - but it was fun!

The penguins at Barcelona aquarium have given Chris and I more than a small obsession with said creatures.
Well, to be fair the interest was there before but now it's huge. I can't wait to go swimming with the smelly things in Cape Town next year.
